For years, photographer Anastasia Pottinger has strived to shine a spotlight on an underrated and overlooked demographic: the elderly. Specifically, she features centenarians—people who have lived to be 100 years old—in her series of revealing portraits. Compiled into a book called 100: What Time Creates, these one-of-a-kind photographs offer an “intricate look into the beauty that can be found by appreciating and valuing how our bodies change with the passage of time.”

Pottinger notes that modern society's obsession with youth is what initially inspired her to turn her attention to older subjects. To counter the airbrushed images and anti-aging sentiment promoted by the media, Pottinger reveals—and celebrates—what living a long life looks and feels like. Using nothing more than “light, shadow, talent, experience, and her intuitive perspective,” she captures snapshots that are as beautiful as they are raw, offering viewers a much-needed look at real aging bodies.

In addition to shooting photographs of the elderly for this passion project, Pottinger also specializes in child photography. While these two genres of portraiture may seem worlds (and years) apart, both are perfectly suited to Pottinger's artistic approach, which she characterizes as “authentic and real” with “no pressure” added.
